USCIS Extends Green Card Validity for Naturalization Applicants
On December 9, USCIS announced a policy update to automatically extend the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (also known as Green Cards) for lawful permanent residents who have applied for naturalization. This update alleviates long waits for naturalization and avoids filing an I-90 application purely for the purpose of filing their naturalization application. Individuals who properly file Form N-400 Application for Naturalization will receive a receipt notice with language that states their permanent residence has been extended for 24 months while the naturalization application remains pending. The receipt notice may be presented with an expired green card as evidence of continued status as well as identity and employment authorization List A of Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9), if presented before the expiration of the 24-month extension period provided in the notice.
