Biden Administration Immigration Changes
The 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, was sworn in on January 20th along with Vice President Kamala Harris and he immediately implemented executive orders and proposed legislation relating to immigration policy in the US. Below are several of the changes that Biden has already implemented or proposed as part of his immigration legislation:
Rescinded the Muslim Travel Ban
Halted deportations for the first 100 days of administration
Put all federal regulations proposed or finalized in the last 60 days of the Trump administration on hold and under review. This includes DHS and DOL rules regarding H-1B wages and lottery selection process.
Stopped construction of the US-Mexico border wall
Blocked deportation for Liberians living in the US
Proposed US Citizenship Act of 2021 legislation to Congress which includes:
An earned path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented individuals in the US
Solidifying the DACA program
Clearing visa backlogs
Eliminating per country green card quotas
Increase Diversity Visa Lottery quota
EADs for H-4 spouses
Prevent children from aging out of the immigration process
Crack down on criminal organizations
Address root causes of migration, especially in Central America
There are several more immigration changes expected from the Biden administration, including rescinding executive orders barring Immigration Visas and H, L, and J nonimmigrant visas, as well as overturning more restrictive Trump administration policies that were implemented over the last four years.
